SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The University of Utah Utes have officially named Kevin McGiven as their new offensive coordinator, the university announced Monday. McGiven, a veteran coach with a track record of developing quarterbacks and innovative offensive schemes, is tasked with breathing new life into a Utes offense that struggled to find consistency last season.
The move comes after a disappointing offensive showing in 2023, where the Utes ranked near the bottom of the Pac-12 in several key offensive categories, including scoring offense and passing efficiency. Head Coach Kyle Whittingham emphasized the need for a fresh perspective and a more dynamic approach in order to compete in the increasingly competitive landscape of college football.
"We are excited to welcome Kevin to the Utah football program," Whittingham said in a statement released by the university. "He brings a wealth of experience and a proven ability to develop quarterbacks and create productive offenses. We believe he is the right person to lead our offensive unit and help us achieve our goals."
McGiven joins the Utes after a stint as an offensive analyst at the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to USC, he served as the offensive coordinator at several universities, including San Jose State and Utah State. His experience in the Mountain West Conference, as well as his time observing Lincoln Riley's high-powered offense at USC, is expected to be invaluable as he transitions to his new role in Salt Lake City.
During his tenure at Utah State, McGiven oversaw one of the most prolific offenses in the nation. In 2018, the Aggies ranked among the top offenses in scoring, total yardage, and passing efficiency. He is known for his ability to tailor his offensive schemes to the strengths of his personnel and create a balanced attack that utilizes both the running and passing game.
One of McGiven's immediate priorities will be to evaluate the quarterback position. With the departure of Cam Rising, who exhausted his eligibility after battling injuries for much of the 2023 season, the Utes will have a quarterback competition during spring practice. McGiven's expertise in quarterback development will be crucial in identifying and preparing the next signal caller for the Utes.
"I'm honored and excited to join Coach Whittingham and the Utah football program," McGiven stated in a press release. "Utah has a rich tradition of success, and I'm committed to working hard to build a dynamic and explosive offense. I look forward to working with the talented student-athletes and contributing to the team's success."
The hiring of McGiven is seen as a significant step towards addressing the offensive shortcomings that plagued the Utes last season. The team's struggles on offense ultimately hindered their ability to compete for a Pac-12 championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff.
While the specific details of McGiven's offensive scheme remain to be seen, it is expected that he will implement a more aggressive and modern approach that takes advantage of the Utes' offensive playmakers. He is known for his use of tempo, pre-snap motion, and varied formations to create mismatches and exploit defensive weaknesses.
The Utes coaching staff has been under pressure from fans and boosters to improve the offense. The team's defense, consistently one of the best in the Pac-12 under defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, has often been let down by the offense's inability to consistently score points.
McGiven's success will largely depend on his ability to recruit and develop talent. The Utes will need to attract top offensive players in order to compete with the high-powered offenses in the Big 12, which they will be joining this fall. His established reputation as a quarterback whisperer and offensive innovator will be key to convincing recruits that Utah is the right place to develop their skills.
The hiring of McGiven signals a new chapter for the Utah Utes football program. As they transition to the Big 12 Conference, the Utes are hoping that McGiven can provide the spark needed to elevate their offense and compete for championships. The Utes faithful will be eagerly watching as McGiven implements his vision and works to transform the Utes into an offensive powerhouse.
