SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Utes football program has officially named Kevin McGiven as its new offensive coordinator, the university announced Monday. McGiven, a veteran coach with extensive experience in the Pac-12 Conference, steps into the role with the task of revitalizing the Utes' offense.
The move comes after a period of speculation following the departure of the previous offensive coordinator. Head Coach Kyle Whittingham emphasized McGiven's proven track record and familiarity with the program as key factors in the decision.
"Kevin brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong understanding of our program's values," Whittingham said in a statement released by the university. "He's a proven play-caller and has a history of developing quarterbacks. We're confident he's the right person to lead our offense forward."
McGiven is no stranger to the Utah program. He previously served as the Utes' co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2009 to 2011, a period that saw the Utes transition into the Pac-12. During that time, he played a significant role in developing Utah’s offensive schemes.
Before returning to Salt Lake City, McGiven held various offensive coaching positions across the collegiate landscape. Most recently, he served as the offensive coordinator at San Jose State University. His other stops include Oregon State University, where he also served as offensive coordinator, and Utah State University. At each stop, McGiven has been credited with improving offensive output and developing quarterbacks.
The appointment of McGiven signals a potential shift in offensive philosophy for the Utes. While the specific details of his plans are yet to be revealed, his past experience suggests a balanced approach, emphasizing both the running game and passing attack. One of his major challenges will be integrating new talent and building a cohesive unit capable of competing in the demanding Pac-12 Conference.
"I'm thrilled to be back in Salt Lake City and to be a part of the Utes family again," McGiven stated. "I have a deep respect for Coach Whittingham and the program he's built. I'm eager to get to work with the players and coaches to develop a dynamic and productive offense."
The Utes' offense struggled at times last season, facing inconsistency in the passing game and relying heavily on their running attack. The addition of McGiven is expected to bring a fresh perspective and inject new ideas into the offensive game plan.
Analysts believe that McGiven's familiarity with the Pac-12 will be a significant asset. His experience in recruiting within the conference and understanding the defensive schemes employed by opposing teams will be invaluable as the Utes aim to climb the Pac-12 standings.
The Utes are looking to McGiven to improve the team's scoring efficiency and create more opportunities for their playmakers. The expectations are high, as the Utes faithful hope to see a return to the high-scoring offenses that have characterized some of the program's most successful seasons.
McGiven's contract details were not immediately disclosed. He is expected to begin his duties immediately, working with the current roster and preparing for the upcoming season. The Utes open their season at home in late August, giving McGiven and his staff ample time to implement their offensive system. Utes fans will be keenly observing the offense's progress during spring practices and fall camp, eager to see the impact of the new coordinator. The success of the Utes season may well depend on McGiven's ability to quickly adapt and improve the Utah offense.
