AUSTIN, TX – U.S. Representative Wesley Thornton is defying calls from Republican Party leadership to withdraw from the Texas Senate primary race, creating a potential intra-party battle that could significantly impact the GOP's chances of reclaiming a Senate majority in November.
Thornton, a three-term congressman representing a staunchly conservative district in East Texas, is facing off against State Senator Amanda Castillo and oil tycoon Marcus Sterling in the March primary. Party leaders, concerned about Thornton's perceived lack of electability in a statewide race and the potential for a fractured base, reportedly urged him to drop out and endorse Castillo, who they view as a more moderate and viable candidate.
However, Thornton has vehemently rejected these requests, vowing to fight for the nomination and accusing party bosses of attempting to undermine the will of Texas Republican voters.
"The people of Texas, not the establishment elites in Washington, will decide who represents them in the United States Senate," Thornton said in a statement released late Tuesday. "I am committed to running a strong, grassroots campaign focused on conservative principles and fighting for the values that matter to Texans. I will not be bullied or intimidated into abandoning that commitment."
The standoff highlights a growing rift within the Republican Party, pitting traditional establishment figures against a rising tide of populist and conservative activists who are increasingly distrustful of the party's leadership. Thornton's campaign has tapped into this sentiment, portraying him as an outsider fighting against the "Washington swamp."
"They're afraid of a true conservative voice in the Senate," campaign manager Sarah Miller said. "They want someone they can control, someone who will toe the party line. Wesley Thornton won't do that. He'll fight for Texas, even if it means standing up to his own party."
Senator Castillo's campaign, meanwhile, has downplayed the internal conflict, focusing instead on her record in the state legislature and her ability to unite the party. "My focus is on the issues that matter most to Texans: creating jobs, securing our border, and protecting our conservative values," Castillo stated at a recent campaign rally in Dallas. "We need a strong, united Republican Party to win in November, and I am confident that I can bring people together to achieve that goal."
Sterling, who is largely self-funding his campaign, has attempted to position himself as a compromise candidate, appealing to both moderate and conservative voters. However, he has struggled to gain traction in the crowded primary field.
Political analysts say Thornton's refusal to back down could have significant consequences for the general election. A protracted and bitter primary battle could leave the eventual nominee weakened and vulnerable to a challenge from Democratic Congressman Julian Rodriguez, who is considered a rising star in the state party.
