CANTON, OH – A massive fire ripped through a business complex in Jackson Township early this morning, leaving the structure a total loss and prompting an investigation into the cause. Firefighters responded to the scene on Whipple Avenue NW around 2:00 AM after receiving multiple reports of smoke and flames emanating from the building.
According to Jackson Township Fire Chief, Rick Agnone, crews arrived to find heavy fire engulfing a significant portion of the single-story structure. "The fire was already well-involved when we arrived," Agnone stated at a press briefing held near the scene. "We immediately called for mutual aid from surrounding departments due to the size and intensity of the blaze."
Firefighters from Canton, Perry Township, and Plain Township assisted Jackson Township crews in battling the fire for several hours. The extensive damage and intense heat made gaining control of the situation challenging.
"The building is a complete loss," Agnone confirmed. "The roof has collapsed in several areas, and there is extensive structural damage throughout."
While the exact businesses housed within the complex are still being confirmed, preliminary reports indicate that several small businesses, including a printing shop and a professional cleaning service, operated from the location. The total number of businesses affected and the estimated financial losses are still being assessed.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The building was reportedly unoccupied at the time the fire broke out.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Jackson Township Fire Department, with assistance from the State Fire Marshal's Office. Investigators are sifting through the debris, looking for clues to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
"We're keeping all possibilities open at this point," Agnone said. "We will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. We are looking into everything from possible electrical malfunctions to accidental causes, and, as a matter of procedure, cannot rule out arson at this stage."
Whipple Avenue NW was closed to traffic for several hours while firefighters battled the blaze and investigators began their work. The road has since been reopened, but officials are urging motorists to exercise caution in the area as crews continue to monitor the site for hotspots.
