PHOENIX, AZ – Banner Health, one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems in the United States, announced it will reinstate mandatory masking for all staff, patients, and visitors at its hospitals and healthcare facilities, effective January 1st. The decision comes as Arizona and the broader Southwest region experience a significant surge in influenza cases, mirroring a national trend of escalating respiratory illnesses.
The move aims to protect vulnerable patients and healthcare workers from the rapidly spreading flu virus, as well as other respiratory ailments like RSV and COVID-19, though officials specifically cited the influenza uptick as the primary driver behind the policy change.
"Given the increasing prevalence of influenza across our communities, we are taking proactive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of everyone who enters our facilities," said Dr. Marjorie Bessel, Chief Clinical Officer at Banner Health, in a released statement. "Masking is a proven and effective strategy to limit the transmission of respiratory viruses, especially in a healthcare setting where individuals are already more susceptible to illness."
The mandate will require all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a medical-grade mask while inside any Banner Health hospital, clinic, or affiliated medical office. The hospital system will provide masks at entry points for those who do not have their own. Acceptable masks include surgical masks, N95 respirators, and KN95 masks. Cloth masks are generally discouraged.
The reinstated masking policy marks a shift from Banner Health's previous guidelines, which had largely relaxed masking requirements earlier in the year as COVID-19 cases declined. However, the current flu season is proving to be particularly severe, with infection rates exceeding those seen in recent years. This surge is putting a strain on healthcare resources across the state, including emergency rooms and intensive care units.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows a marked increase in influenza activity nationwide. In Arizona, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) is reporting a significant jump in flu-related hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Health officials are strongly encouraging individuals to get vaccinated against influenza and practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes.
"Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself and others from the flu," emphasized Dr. Bessel. "We urge everyone to get their flu shot if they haven't already done so. It's not too late to benefit from its protection.”
