PHOENIX, AZ – Citing a significant uptick in influenza cases across the state, Banner Health, Arizona’s largest healthcare provider, will reimplement a mandatory masking policy for all individuals entering its hospitals and healthcare facilities, effective January 1st. The decision, announced late Thursday, aims to protect patients, staff, and visitors from the escalating spread of the flu virus during peak season.
The reinstated mask mandate applies to all Banner Health locations throughout Arizona, encompassing hospitals, clinics, and outpatient centers. Individuals, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to wear a medical-grade mask while inside any Banner Health facility. The hospital system will provide masks for those who do not have their own.
"The safety and well-being of our patients and staff is our top priority," said Dr. Marjorie Bessel, Chief Clinical Officer for Banner Health, in a released statement. "We are seeing a concerning rise in influenza cases across Arizona, and this measure is a necessary step to mitigate the spread of the virus within our healthcare facilities and protect vulnerable individuals."
The decision comes as Arizona health officials report a marked increase in influenza activity in recent weeks. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) has indicated that key influenza indicators, including positive test results and hospitalizations, are trending upwards, mirroring a national trend.
"We are closely monitoring influenza activity across the state and are working with healthcare providers to ensure they have the resources they need to manage the surge," stated a spokesperson for ADHS. "We encourage all Arizonans to take preventative measures, such as getting vaccinated against the flu and practicing good hygiene, to protect themselves and others."
Banner Health officials emphasize that the mask mandate is a proactive measure designed to prevent the spread of influenza within healthcare settings, where individuals are often at higher risk of complications. Hospitals and clinics can be breeding grounds for respiratory illnesses due to the concentration of sick individuals and close proximity of patients and healthcare workers.
The policy shift marks a return to stricter infection control protocols after a period of relaxed masking requirements. Banner Health had previously lifted its mask mandate in most settings earlier in the year, following a decline in COVID-19 cases and the easing of pandemic-related restrictions.
The health system acknowledges that the return of mandatory masking may be inconvenient for some, but stresses the importance of prioritizing patient safety. Signage will be posted at all Banner Health facilities to inform visitors of the new policy. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide assistance as needed.
While the mask mandate is currently focused on influenza, Banner Health officials are continuing to monitor the prevalence of other respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). The health system reserves the right to adjust its masking policy based on changes in the epidemiological landscape and public health recommendations.
Arizonans are urged to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading influenza. Health officials recommend annual flu vaccinations for everyone six months and older, as well as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.
For more information on influenza prevention and treatment, individuals are encouraged to consult with their healthcare providers or visit the Arizona Department of Health Services website. Banner Health will also provide updates and information regarding its masking policy on its website and social media channels.
